How can I help my team work well together?
There are hundreds of great books on team building. We want to share an approach that can start to build a person-centred culture, and that also mirrors the way that you want patients to be supported as well.
One way to help a team work well together is to start by looking at what matters to each individual, and what they want other people to know or do to support them at work. A one-page profile is a great way to do this. A powerful way to get started is to look at what a good day looks like for each person and what a bad day looks like. This is useful in three ways:
- It can help you to learn what is important to the person, and what good support looks like.
- It can help them to recognise what they can do to have more good days at work.
- You can look together as a team at what you can do to support each other to have better days at work and develop some ‘team agreements’ around this.
Once you have developed team agreements together, you can explore what is working and not working about how the team is putting these into practice. You can also do this on an individual basis in supervision or appraisal, by looking together at your colleagues’ one-page profiles and asking what is working and not working for them, in relation to the support section in particular.
For both options (doing this around team agreements together, or individually with one-page profiles), it is then important to look at what you can do to keep what is working and change what is not working. Although you will not be able to change everything that is not working, people will appreciate you making sure you ask and listen, and showing that you are doing what you can within your sphere of influence. You might want to go on and learn more about person-centred teams, and think about how you can change your meetings to make them both positive and productive.
